Design and Build of Canon : EOS 80D DSLR Camera

The design and build of the Canon EOS 80D DSLR Camera looks pretty much similar to its sibling EOS 70D. There is mode dial on the left side of the camera on the top. In order to avoid accidental bump, the mode dial also has locking system.

Access controls such as AF mode, Drive, ISO and Metering are placed on the right of the camera along the display. The LCD panel illumination button is well placed on the right of the metering button. It is also good to see that the AF selection button is placed in the middle of the control dial and shutter release. You can move around different AF area modes easily.

While comparing the Canon EOS 80D with its Rebel-series, we found there are a few additional control buttons with this unit. On the top right of the camera, you will find the ISO and AF area selection buttons. These are good to use with your eye to the finder.

The touch control mechanism offered with the camera is really good that lets you access main menu and Quick Menus easily. This ultimately reduces the access time and speeds up the operation. With this your work is drastically cut while you are scrolling through images and setting AF point and shutter in Live mode.

Our user review shows that it did not involve much hard work to access to access the majority of the control buttons with the EOS 80D. You will also recognize that it needs you to move your thumb downwards significantly if you set the multi controller as your AFP selector.

The Quick Menu option offered by the EOS 80D DSLR Camera comes very handy as it helps boosting speed to access the most common features. A little bit of improvement could have been brought into the camera by making it customizable so that it has only those features which are being used frequently.

The EOS 80D offers 3-inch II screen with 1040K dot which gives amazing detailed and crisp view. You will also appreciate the manual focusing functionality when you zoom in target area on the screen in Live View Mode. It is surely much easier to use manual focusing than using viewfinder.

While shooting under the bright sunlight, you need to increase the brightness to the maximum limited to get clear view. Device’s display is very good but using viewfinder is better option for shooting moving subjects. Also it provides 100% field of view coverage as compared to its predecessor EOS 70D that has 98% field of view coverage.

The camera is very well designed with 10 creative filter effects you can apply to your image when taken. When we shot raw files or JPEG files, we noticed the camera switching over to JPEG mode automatically. While creative filters can be applied when creating images in the viewfinder, their effects can only be seen on the main screen in Live View mode.

Performance of Canon : EOS 80D DSLR Camera

The Canon EOS 80D comes with an increased 24.2Megapixels count. By comparison to its predecessor, EOS 70D, its an increase of approx. 25% pixel count. This has been a significant improvement to maintain the details of the images with majority of sensitivity range, while keeping the noise level well under control.

When we talk about the performance of the camera, it is an important point that need a special attention that is the ISO sensitivity. The ISO is a measure your camera sensor’s sensitivity to the light. In other words, it is an indication shat reflects the performance of the camera in different light conditions.

Therefore, if you set the ISO value at the lower level, the sensitivity of the sensor to the light less, while higher ISO value means the camera is more sensitivity to the light. The higher ISO value is suitable to take photos in darker light conditions. But it also increases the grain or noise in your images. Surely, you need be comfortable with some noise while having more light for the shooting.

The Canon EOS 80D features the ISO sensitivity range of 100-12,800 which is also expandable to 25,600. While shooting exposure at the ISO level below 12,800, our user review did not show a significant grain or noise in the images. This however, was noticeable when we increased the ISO level to 12,800 and above.

Setting the ISO value to the uppermost level of 25,600, would not produce satisfactory results. It is also not advisable unless you really need to use. Noise may be controlled to some extent, but detail is lost.

The EOS 80D has come up with improved autofocus system which has a very good speed. We are sure you will not be disappointed while shooting stationary objects as well fast moving subjects. Even in weak light conditions image quality is pretty sharp thanks to its flash system.

Coming to the burst mode shooting, it is a shooting mode where photographer captures several images in quick succession either by pressing shutter button or holding it down. This is useful when you are shooting subjects that are in successive motion. This involves selecting the best image shot in the group or arrange them in a sequence to study the transition in details.

The Canon EOS 80D has provided with the capability of shooting at 7 fps burst mode. This is similar to its predecessor, EOS 70D. Our user experience shows irrespective of the image size selected, the camera is well engineered to capture images at 7 fps in sequential high or 3 fps in sequential low using viewfinder.

While shooting stills of moving subjects, Live View mode and video mode AF system is quite fast. However, using viewfinder is more reliable by comparison. The camera comes with Dual Pixel CMOS AF system. Shifting focus in video shooting smooth and comes handy, but it depends on shooting conditions and speed of movement.

With the Canon EOS 80D DSLR Camera you can shoot video at 1080/60p with MP4 and for higher quality video you can record MOV files at 1080/30p or 1080/24p. The camera also offers built-in stereo microphone as well as microphone and headphone and HDMI port

The camera has LP-E6 rechargeable lithium-ion battery. The battery has a good backup. you can expect 960 shots per single charge. According to our experience, it has a very good battery life by any standard.

Conclusion

Going by our user rating, overall performance of the Canon EOS 80D DSLR Camera is found to be excellent. The buttons are well placed. It is easy for the users to find on/off switch once they have the camera in their hand. We also found the camera is very responsive and pretty quick to start up. It also a great advantage that the menu remembers the previous location accessed which lets you jump back readjust settings.

The Canon EOS 80D features one the best dynamic ranges of APS -C CMOS Sensor. It also offers dual pixel AF that lets you shoot with continuous focus during video and still capture. The touchscreen functionality is articulating and comes very handy in live view mode. Although image quality and video resolution is bit behind competition, the EOS 80D is perfect choice for many enthusiasts photographers.
